In search of a decent pen

Did some googling for “favorite pen”. I’m going to keep my eyes peeled out for these ones when I do my errands today:
  • Pilot G2
  • Pilot G-Tec C4
  • Uniball Micro 0.2mm
  • Uniball Signo RT 0.38
  • Pilot Hi-Tec 0.25
They’re inexpensive pens that people are saying good things about.

What’s your favorite pen? ∎

  1. This reminds me of Mitch Hedberg: "I bought a seven-dollar pen because I always lose pens and I got sick of ... ... ... not caring."

I really like red felt-tip pens that look like this:

Although I have cheap knock offs not the papermate ones.

  2. I mainly use Stabilo Point 88 Fine 0,4 pens.
    I love'em!

  3. Cool stuff, guys. I’ll look out for those.

  4. I'm all about the Pilot G-2 gel pens. Pretty cheap, the 0.7 is great for everyday use, and the 1.0's boldness gets me rolling for notes and brainstorming. I'm also a fan of the Sarasa pens, which are almost the equal of the G-2, but can also frequently be found in big packs of fun colors.

  5. I can spend hours at the stationery store browsing at pens. They are not too expensive but they add up. About two years ago I read a review on a Lamy 2000 fountain pen at http://mikeshea.net/Lamy_2000_Fountain_Pen_Re.html and decided to splurge. Since then I don't buy as many of these other pens. I told myself that since I could refill the fountain pen I would be saving money in the long run. I'm not sure how many years the break even point is but it doesn't matter because the Lamy is a pleasure to use.

  6. I tried (as everybody else I guess) different pens to find out which one suits me best.
For the last 4-5 years I've been using the basic 4-colours Bic pen. It is not the best looking pen on the market; design has not change since probably 1950 but I like it and goes with me everywhere (and you get 4 colours for good price!)

I had Pilot before, really good pen but I found that if you carry them around (in your pocket) they have a tendency lo leak...

  7. Marc—I keep hearing about the G-2. I purchased one and will be interested to see how it is.

Anonymous—Lamy’s are supposed to be a delight to use—you’re lucky to have one!

Naro—Yeah, having 4 colors in 1 is hard to beat!

  9. If you can splurge, I would definitely go for the Lamy, it is indeed a pleasure to use. However, for everyday use, I suggest the Uni-ball 207 Micro. Much better than the G2. Pilot P-500 is algo a good choice for everyday. Let us know how it goes!

  10. Thanks for the tip, Carmen. I got the Uni-ball 207 Micro, and will look for a P-500 today.

The G2 and G-Tec-C4 seem a bit scratchy—maybe I need to get used to these needle-like nibs.

The Uni-ball Jetstream just seems to be a ballpoint—not sure what’s so special about it.

  11. Try the Pilot Precise V5 RT, my current fave. It's a retractable version of the regular Precise.

  12. That V5 RT looks nice, skippykawakami. I’ll need to check it out.

Just got a bright-green Zebra Sarasa 0.7 and a bright red Sharpie Fine. Love the bold colors.

  13. The Jetstream is a ballboint...but it's wonderfully smooth with a solid line. It's wonderful to write with.

I hear the Pilot is copying it with something called the Acroball. It doesn't seem to be available in the US yet...

  14. Yeah—I’d have to agree that the Jetstream is darker and smoother than a typical ballpoint. Doesn’t hurt that it looks nice too.
