I use to use Google Desktop, but I don't really have the RAM to spare, and it takes up quite a bit of it. I loved the gadgets but the only one I felt really improved my proficiency was the Todo List. I uninstalled GD and found Rainlendar. It's incredible and fully skinnable, thousands of beautiful skins already out there (check http://www.customize.org). You can download it at http://www.ipi.fi/~rainy/index.php?pn=projects&project=rainlendar . It's open source a very small app that has a calendar and todo list. I couldn't live without it now.
